About

Hello. Welcome to Beyond Nightingale. This site is a digital resource that introduces people to the transformation of nursing in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century British literature and images. This website corresponds to my dissertation and extends my current research with digital materials. I hope that this site will serve as a resource for scholars and students to learn about and contribute to this topic.

There are two main ways to explore the material.

1. Chapters. Though this project is largely chronological through the nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries, each chapter focuses on one or two specific fears that literature alleviated in order to make hired nursing an acceptable profession for middle-class women. You can go through the material chronologically, or select any topic that interests you. This method combines image and text. If you select this method, I recommend reading the Introduction first.

2. Browse. To casually peruse the images of nurses from throughout the period without textual analysis, visit this page. You can always select an image and follow the link to learn more.

Thank you for visiting. I hope that you enjoy the site.
