Breaking into teams

 

There are six suspects who are known to have either last seen the book in question or are known to have a motive to harm Middlemarch. To make the most of our time, you will break into teams and each team will locate and interview one of the suspects. When you find the suspect's location and pysically go to their residence, you will be given your clue phrase. This word or phrase will allow you to interview the suspect. After listening to and reading the interview, you will have a number of research questions to help you further understand the case and determine if your suspect was, indeed, the culprit. But first, locate and proceed to your suspect.

The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Dorian Gray is a highly suspicious character, despite his public reputation of being a handsome and educated member of the upper class. You suspect that he has reason to harm Middlemarch and are determined to dig deeper into this matter to find the truth. You might even ask around to try and find out more about the hidden side of his life...

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre was one of the last to see Middlemarch alive and well. Learn as much as you can from her, because she has an inquisitive and slightly suspecious nature and her clues might be quite helpful for your investigation. Even though Jane may appear a calm and reserved woman, there may be something darker lurking just beaneath the suface...

Bleak House by Charles Dickens

Bleak House was another book who was one of the last to see Middlemarch alive and well. There are dozens of characters within Bleak House, but Jo is the one you want to interview. He claims to know nothing, but ruffians of his sort are always up to no good. He knows a great deal about the culture of the city, especially the seedier side, which you must learn from him.

The Story of an African Farm by Olive Schreiner

Lyndall is an interesting character who doesn't seem to fit your understanding of what a good Victorian woman ought to be. She challenges traditional notions of womanhood - notions that you will need to understand. She also seems to have a great deal of underlying anger and rage - even toward this book in particular - which you will need to unearth and comprehend before moving on.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

Dr. Jekyll appears to be an upstanding, repsectable London physician, but you have heard the rumours of a mysterious and, perhaps, dangerous, associate of Dr. Jekyll named Mr. Hyde. You want to learn more about Dr. Jekyll, the science of his day, and his focus. You also want to learn more about what a "respectable" London gentleman was and if Jekyll meets the criteria or not.

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins

Ezra Jennings is a curious man with a mysterious past. He claims to be a doctor, yet you are unsure what medical care he is providing - when he is not in an opium induced stupor, that is. You will try to determine where he is from, but will need to do more research about the British Empire to figure it out.
