1. Jane was a governess. Was this a good life for a young woman?

2. What kind of employment opportunities did women have at this time?

3. Jane voiced some frustration with the division of men's and women's "spheres." What were the seperate spheres of men and women and what were the consequences if a woman traveled outside of her sphere?

4. Jane mentioned the travelling gipsy. What is a gipsy? Were they common in England?

5. Jane did not want to go with her cousin to India, for numerous reasons. What is England’s relationship to India? Are there reasons why a young woman would not want to go to India in the Victorian period?

6. Jane inherited wealth from her uncle. Once she marries, does she get to keep her fortune?
