Analysis Essays

Textual Analysis

Your task is to compose an essay on some aspect of The Sign of Four that you find problematic, contradictory, or puzzling. As we've discussed in class, your essay should:

·         be organized around a single, clear deduction/thesis statement (an assertion that can be proven true or false. Don’t just observe – make a deduction that is backed up with your observations)

·         offer topic sentences (or reasons for your deduction) in each paragraph

·         support your reasons with evidence in the form of examples and quotations from the text

·         feature a introductory paragraph that introduces your deduction and states your reasons

·         feature a concluding paragraph that recaps your deduction and reasons

·         use MLA style for notes and citations from the text

·         exhibit few or no errors in sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Your essay should be 4-5 pages.

The essay should be typed in 12pt font and double-spaced in a Word document (with a .doc or .docx at the end) with 1-inch margins on all sides. Your essay will need a title, but not a title page: place your name, the course number (ENG 1510), the date, and my name at the top left-hand corner of the first page. Consult the rubric for grading standards, and please contact me if you would like help with any aspect of your essay.

Visual Anlysis

For your second essay, you will write about a visual aspect of the Sherlock episode. You may write only about the episode, or you may write a comparison essay between the episode and the original text.

--If you are writing only about the episode, follow the same guidelines as the textual analysis essay but you will analyze not just the text, but the visual elements of the episode such as camera angles, lighting, shot juxtaposition, etc.

--If you are writing about both the episode and the novel, first find a shared element between two works. This could be a similar theme, arguments on a similar topic, a shared character development, etc. Next, articulate how this shared element is presented differently in the two texts. Third and most importantly, explain the effect of this difference. Remember that you are not just describing the difference, you must have a clear, specific, debatable statement about the effect this difference has on our understanding of the texts.
